Following October's local elections, a new coalition has taken the reins in Valga Municipality. At the forefront is the newly appointed mayor, Mart Kase, representing the Social Democrats (SDE). He's already setting the tone, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with Latvia and advocating for the region's interests in both Tallinn (Estonia's capital) and Riga (Latvia's capital).
Mayor Kase envisions a future where Valga and its Latvian counterpart, Valka, capitalize on their unique geographical position, shared opportunities, and the existing railway connection. He's particularly focused on attracting more residents and fostering entrepreneurship.
"There's no other way — we have to attract more residents so that entrepreneurship can grow. That's how the money will come," Kase stated. "We are proud of Valga, and we'll do everything we can to get this town developing again, so that people can feel confident and dignified living here."
But here's where it gets interesting: Mayor Kase's diverse background in psychology, drama, marketing, school leadership, and farming could prove to be a significant asset in this role. His coalition, comprising the Social Democrats, the electoral alliance Valga Eest ja Heaks, and the Center Party, is keen on boosting residents' confidence in their town.
They're not just dreaming; they're strategizing. One of their key considerations involves upgrading or building new kindergarten facilities. Margus Lepik, a seasoned politician from the Reform Party, believes the new leadership should strive for greater clarity in their actions.
