The couple's due date was set for January 2nd, but little Capri had her own plans. Schenn, aware of the possibility, had discussed the situation with the Blues' management, and they supported his decision to travel with the team to Denver for the New Year's Eve game against the Colorado Avalanche.
"I wasn't sure if I'd make the trip," Schenn admitted. "But the team gave me the freedom to choose, and I decided to be with my teammates."
However, the game didn't go as planned, with the Blues suffering a lopsided loss. During the second intermission, Schenn received a text from his wife, Kelsey, informing him of her contractions. He played the third period with a heavy heart, knowing he had to get back to St. Louis immediately.
"It was a tough night, but family comes first," Schenn said.
He rushed to the airport, made the two-hour flight home, and arrived at the hospital just in time to witness Capri's birth.
And this is the part most people miss... Schenn's dedication didn't end there. Despite the late night and early morning, he slept at the hospital with his wife and new daughter, then headed straight back to the rink the next day for a 2 p.m. game against the Montreal Canadiens.
"It's all about balance," Schenn explained. "Being a pro athlete and a father is a unique challenge, but I'm grateful for the support of my team and the opportunity to be there for both."
The Blues, too, showed resilience, bouncing back from their embarrassing loss to the Avalanche. Coach Jim Montgomery emphasized the team's determination and focus on hard areas of the ice.
Alexey Toropchenko and Oskar Sundqvist scored crucial goals, with Montgomery praising their efforts.
