South Korean retail giant Coupang to compensate $1.1 billion to affected users over data breach

South Korean online retail giant Coupang has announced a substantial compensation package of 1.69 trillion South Korean won ($1.17 billion) for 34 million users impacted by a significant data breach that was disclosed last month. The company plans to provide customers with purchase vouchers totaling 50,000 won for various Coupang services, including a wide range of products and services.
This move comes as a response to the data breach, which has led to a series of consequences, including the resignation of CEO Park Dae-jun and an apology from the company's founder, Kim Bom. The breach, revealed on November 18, caused widespread concern and disappointment among customers.
Former customers who closed their Coupang accounts following the data breach are also eligible to receive the vouchers. Users can check their eligibility for the vouchers starting January 15. Harold Rogers, the interim CEO for Coupang Corp., described the compensation as a "responsible measure for our customers" and emphasized the company's commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities.
The data breach has sparked a series of events, including a public apology from Rogers and a deeper reflection from Kim Bom. The U.S.-based chairman acknowledged the company's initial communication shortcomings and expressed his regret for the delay in apologizing. He emphasized the importance of transparent and sincere communication, especially in times of crisis.
This compensation package is a significant step towards addressing the impact of the data breach and demonstrates Coupang's commitment to customer satisfaction and accountability.
