Imagine this: Hugh Jackman, the global superstar, having a sleepover at Neil Diamond's house! Sounds like a dream, right? Well, it actually happened, and the story behind it is as heartwarming as it is unexpected.
It all began when Neil Diamond, deeply moved by a movie featuring a tribute band dedicated to his music, reached out to Jackman. The film, titled Song Sung Blue, clearly struck a chord with the legendary singer. Diamond was so emotional after watching it that he called Jackman, sharing his feelings and praising the film.
Jackman, seizing the moment, playfully suggested they have a 'cuppa' (a British term for a cup of tea or coffee). The next thing he knew, he was invited to stay the night! Diamond's wife, Katie, sealed the deal, and a unique friendship blossomed.
Upon arriving, Diamond greeted Jackman warmly, expressing his appreciation for the film. The evening took an even more unforgettable turn when Diamond, the music icon himself, suggested they do karaoke!
And this is the part most people miss... The karaoke session was epic. They sang classics like "I Dreamed a Dream," a song Jackman performed in Les Misérables, and "Can't Help Falling in Love." Of course, they also belted out Diamond's iconic "Sweet Caroline." What a night!
But here's where it gets controversial... While Diamond and his wife loved the film, not everyone shared their enthusiasm. Michael Sardina Jr., son of the musician portrayed in the movie, expressed strong disapproval. He felt the film misrepresented his father's legacy and was deeply hurt by the portrayal. He even stated that the film "completely destroyed the one thing my father worked his entire life to pass on — his legacy." His sister, Angelina, echoed his sentiments, calling the movie "upsetting" and "a lie."
However, Claire Sardina, the other subject of the movie, has been supportive.
Song Sung Blue is currently in theaters.
