The 2026 Tour Down Under: A Kangaroo-Caused Chaos and a Surprising Champion
In a thrilling and unexpected turn of events, the 2026 Tour Down Under cycling race in Australia was marked by a dramatic incident involving a kangaroo, which resulted in a surprising champion. Australian cyclist Jay Vine, despite being knocked off his bike in a crash caused by a kangaroo, managed to secure the overall winner's ochre jersey by a narrow margin of one minute and three seconds for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
The incident occurred with around 100 kilometers to go, as the kangaroo darted across the road and leaped into the peloton, sending several riders tumbling. Vine, who was among those affected, quickly recovered and used a teammate's bike to continue the race. The chaos didn't end there; Visma-Lease A Bike rider Matthew Brennan, a strong contender, also had to deal with the aftermath of the kangaroo's antics, as he finished the race in fifth place.
The stage victory went to Brennan, who outpaced New Zealand's Finn Fisher-Black of Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe in a powerful uphill sprint finish. However, the race was not without its casualties, as Menno Huising of the Netherlands, a teammate of Brennan's, had to abandon the race due to injuries sustained in the kangaroo incident.
The 169.8km stage around Stirling near Adelaide saw Tobias Lund Andresen of Decathlon-CMA CGM take third place. Switzerland's Mauro Schmid of Jayco-AlUla finished second overall, and Australia's Harry Sweeney took third for EF Education-EasyPost. Lund Andresen also claimed the blue points jersey, while Norway's Martin Urianstad Bugge won the mint-green king of the mountains jersey for Uno X Mobility.
Brennan's performance this year has been impressive, ranking highly among several young talented British riders competing on the UCI World Tour. In his debut elite-level season in 2025, he won 12 races, showcasing his exceptional skills. This win at the Tour Down Under caps a remarkable week for British riders, following Ethan Vernon's sprint victory on stage four of the race.
The race had been shortened due to extreme temperatures reaching up to 43C. UK road champion Sam Watson secured the opening prologue for Ineos Grenadiers. With many riders now set to compete in the one-day Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in Melbourne, Brennan is a strong favorite for victory, given his prowess on rolling one-day courses. He is expected to participate in several of the sport's biggest races this year, including the one-day Milan-San Remo in March and the iconic Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in April.
