Mayor Karen Bass, a seasoned leader with a bold vision, has officially kicked off her reelection campaign, promising to tackle the city's challenges head-on.
In a passionate speech at a downtown LA rally, Mayor Bass reflected on the city's progress and vowed to continue making Los Angeles more affordable for its residents. "We've accomplished a lot, but we're not done," she declared. "I'm not finished fighting for Angelenos and our city."
Mayor Bass has been at the helm since 2022, and her tenure has seen significant action on the city's housing crisis and efforts to expand the LAPD. She's also overseen the city's response to devastating wildfires earlier this year, showcasing her leadership during times of crisis.
However, her strong stance against the federal government's immigration policies has sparked debates. During her speech, she alluded to defending the city from attacks "3,000 miles away," a clear reference to the ongoing tensions with the Trump administration.

Mayor Bass faces competition from a diverse field of candidates, including Deputy Director of Housing Now California, Rae Huang; longtime city engineer, Asaad Alnajjar; and perhaps most notably, former LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner. Beutner, a former Bass supporter, believes she hasn't done enough to address the everyday struggles of LA residents.
"It's time for a change," Beutner stated in an interview with CBS LA. "Mayor Bass has done well, but the mayor's office is a different role, and we need fresh leadership to tackle the city's problems."
As of now, the race is open, and more candidates may join the fray. The LA mayoral election is scheduled for June 2, with a potential runoff on November 3 if no candidate secures a majority.
