The Latest Buzz Surrounding Domantas Sabonis: A Complicated Situation
At the moment, discussions between the Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings regarding a potential trade have come to a standstill. According to Michael Scotto from HoopsHype, the Raptors are concerned about the extent of draft picks they would need to part with in order to offload center Jakob Poeltl’s contract.
While there has been speculation about the Raptors' interest in Kings’ center Domantas Sabonis, the depth of these negotiations remains somewhat unclear. Michael Grange from Sportsnet.ca notes that much of the conversation surrounding Sabonis may be influenced by his representatives, who are eager to see their client leave a team that is in a rebuilding phase.
Interestingly, Grange reported that insiders close to the Kings indicated on Tuesday that Sacramento might consider a deal involving Sabonis and Raptors forward RJ Barrett. However, he also mentioned that the link between Barrett and Kings general manager Scott Perry—who previously selected Barrett while with the Knicks—is perhaps overstated.
Two significant hurdles seem to be obstructing a possible trade for Sabonis to Toronto. Firstly, Chris Haynes pointed out during an NBA TV segment that a disparity exists between what the Kings seek in return (a first-round draft pick) and what the Raptors are prepared to offer (likely second-round picks).
Secondly, if the Raptors aim to acquire a starting center like Sabonis, they would likely need to send Poeltl away as part of the deal. However, Poeltl’s value is restricted due to the more than $100 million remaining on his contract and ongoing back issues that have plagued him throughout the season. The Kings reportedly have no interest in taking on Poeltl in a deal for Sabonis, which means the Raptors would need to engage a third team willing to accept Poeltl, potentially incentivizing them with additional draft picks.
One source remarked, "He's really difficult to trade right now; he's injured and under contract for five more years."
Previously, the Celtics had shown interest in Poeltl, and the Indiana Pacers—who are looking for a long-term center solution—have also been linked to him. However, the Celtics recently made a trade for another center, Nikola Vucevic, further complicating Poeltl's prospects. Reports indicate that Indiana has not expressed any interest in acquiring him either.
On a different note, the Memphis Grizzlies, having gained some salary cap flexibility following the trade of Jaren Jackson Jr., are being considered as a potential destination for Poeltl. However, they'd likely require significant compensation to absorb his contract, especially considering his current injury concerns.
As for Poeltl’s health, sources have clarified that there isn't a structural issue with his back—no nerve problems, just a perplexing injury that has left many puzzled.
Sam Amick from The Athletic suggested earlier this week that it wouldn't be surprising if no action is taken regarding Sabonis before the trade deadline, leading to renewed discussions between the Raptors and Kings during the offseason. Grange echoed this sentiment, implying that the rumors surrounding Sabonis might ultimately yield no substantial outcomes. He speculated that the Raptors may be better served by hoping that Poeltl can regain his health and rebuild his trade value, either as a bargaining chip or as the franchise's long-term center.
