Vinicius Junior: Mourinho’s “big mistake” amid the shocking racist incident

Trent Alexander-Arnold labeled the alleged racist abuse directed at his Real Madrid teammate Vinicius Junior during a Champions League clash with Benfica as a disgrace to football, while Jose Mourinho—Benfica’s manager at the time—faced criticism for his comments on the episode.

The match paused for about ten minutes after Vinicius reported the abuse by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni to referee François Letexier, prompting Vinicius and his teammates to briefly walk off the pitch.

The Brazil forward, who has faced multiple racist incidents throughout his career, responded on Instagram by saying that racists are “above all cowards.”

Mourinho, who had previously managed Real Madrid and Chelsea, argued that Vinicius did not celebrate his late 1-0 goal in a way that respected the moment, saying the problem is systemic: “Something is wrong because it happens in every stadium. A stadium where Vinicius plays, something happens, always.”

Clarence Seedorf, a former Real Madrid midfielder, criticized Mourinho in a post-match appearance on Amazon Prime. He suggested Mourinho was still reacting emotionally and that his justification of racist abuse was a significant error: if someone provokes you, that does not excuse racism. Seedorf emphasized that we should never justify racist behavior and implied Mourinho would probably see it that way if fully reflected on the matter.

Alexander-Arnold spoke to the media after the game, insisting the abuse was a disgrace that overshadowed Vinicius’s performance and goal. He stressed that racism has no place in football or society and condemned the incident as utterly despicable.

Mourinho approached Vinicius after the 25-year-old decided to leave the field. In his post-match remarks, Mourinho claimed he received conflicting accounts from Vinicius and Prestianni about what happened, and he reiterated his view that Vinicius celebrated inappropriately. He invoked Benfica legend Eusebio as evidence that the club is not racist and suggested Vinicius may have incited the crowd, while noting he preferred to be independent in weighing both sides of the story.

Theo Walcott, a former England international, offered a calmer perspective on Amazon Prime. He praised Mourinho’s career but described his post-match comments as a poor choice, calling it perhaps the one moment when he should have stayed off-camera.

Vinicius’s Madrid teammate Kylian Mbappé urged that Prestianni be barred from Champions League play pending the investigation. Mbappé stressed that while he respects Benfica and its coaching staff, the behavior described by Vinicius cannot be tolerated in Europe’s premier competition and called on UEFA to act decisively.

Prestianni has not released a statement yet.

With Benfica and Real Madrid set to meet again in Madrid, former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry reflected on his own experiences with racist abuse in football during an interview on CBS. Henry shared how it can feel like you’re alone when it’s your word against another’s and encouraged a clear public response from Prestianni about what was said on the field.

Questions to consider: Should players responsibly determine when to walk off the pitch in protest, or should referees have more explicit protocols for handling abuse? How aggressively should governing bodies respond to incidents of racism in high-stakes matches, and who should bear the responsibility for initiating consequences? What role should club legends or former players' perspectives play in shaping the conversation around racism in sport?
