A school's unexpected journey back to the classroom.
Imagine the excitement of returning to school after the Christmas break, a time filled with anticipation and new beginnings. For the students and staff of Nazareth House Primary School in Londonderry, this January marked a particularly special and challenging chapter in their educational journey.
The school, with its 123-year-old roof, had to close its doors abruptly on December 3rd due to safety concerns, leaving over 200 pupils and their families in a state of uncertainty. But here's where it gets controversial: the school community didn't let this setback dampen their spirits.
"It's a massive day for our children. It has been very exciting," said Róisín Blackery, the school's principal. And she's right; the children's resilience and the community's support have been nothing short of inspiring.
During the pre-Christmas period, a well-being hub was set up at a local youth club, ensuring the children's needs were met. Despite the disruption, the school's nativity play and carol service went ahead, bringing a sense of normalcy and joy.
And this is the part most people miss: the school's closure didn't stop the magic of Christmas. The pupils enjoyed a festive dinner at a local hotel, bowled, and even received soccer coaching from the Ryan McBride Foundation. It was a time of celebration and unity, despite the challenging circumstances.
Education Minister Paul Givan stepped in, announcing a plan for Nazareth House pupils to share a site with St Anne's Primary School, ensuring a smooth return to the classroom after the holidays.
On Thursday morning, the excited Nazareth House pupils returned, first to their own school and then, with a short bus ride, to their temporary home at St Anne's. For some, the run-up to Christmas was indeed more exciting than usual, thanks to the community's quick response and support.
"Our team pulled together very quickly," Blackery said. "But it wasn't easy for staff and families. The initial feeling of displacement was unique, and it was only because of the overwhelming support that we kept going."
Gail, a pupil at Nazareth House, described the last month as "very fun." She admitted it was "confusing" at first, but the community's support and the opportunities to meet with friends made it a memorable experience.
Terri Lamberton, Gail's mum, echoed the sentiment: "Getting back to school was great for the children. Seeing the strength of our community as a school has been amazing. I'm so proud to be a parent of Nazareth House."
Isla, a P7 pupil, shared her feelings about the school's closure: "It was upsetting at first, but I'm happy to be back in a classroom. It's good to be together again, to see your friends, your class, and your teacher."
Hannah, a P3 pupil, expressed her happiness: "I'm very happy to be back at school."
Under this temporary arrangement, eight classrooms at St Anne's have been made available to Nazareth House, ensuring both schools maintain their identities.
Blackery emphasized that "this upheaval is something no school community should ever experience." She urged authorities to take note, stating, "It's devastating, and it really shouldn't happen to anyone again."
Eamonn Broderick, chief executive of the Council For Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS), expressed delight at the swift interim solution for Nazareth House, praising the values and ethos of Catholic maintained education.
"Our primary objective is an exceptional standard of education in a welcoming setting," Broderick said. "We look forward to welcoming Nazareth House pupils back once the interim works are completed."
