Red Sox Trade Target? Nico Hoerner Linked to Boston After Bregman Move! (2026)

The Boston Red Sox are making waves this offseason, but could a trade for a two-time Gold Glove winner be the next big move?

After bolstering their pitching staff with acquisitions like Sonny Gray, Johan Oviedo, and reportedly Ranger Suarez, the Red Sox might be shifting their focus to enhance their offense. While they've already brought in Willson Contreras, the departure of Alex Bregman in free agency has left a gap, and a trade could be the key to filling it.

Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic suggests that Chicago Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner could be an ideal fit. Hoerner, a right-handed hitter, primarily plays second base and is known for his exceptional defense. In fact, he was among the best defensive second basemen in the league last year, leading the majors with 14 Outs Above Average (OAA).

Hoerner's offensive stats are also impressive. He hit .297 last season and posted a 6.2 bWAR, with an average of 4.9 bWAR over the last four seasons. Although he's not known for power hitting, his consistent performance makes him a valuable asset.

But here's where it gets interesting: Hoerner is a two-time Gold Glove Award winner, securing the honor in both 2023 and 2025. At 28 years old, he can play both second base and shortstop, potentially filling the void left by Bregman's departure. Last season, he recorded 7 home runs and 61 RBIs, making him a solid bottom-of-the-order bat.

However, there's a catch. Hoerner is entering his final year of control, which means the Red Sox would likely want to secure an extension before making a trade. This could be a deal-breaker or a point of negotiation. Is it worth the risk for the Red Sox?

Even with the reported signing of Suarez, it seems Boston isn't done adding to their roster. This begs the question: What other moves could the Red Sox make to strengthen their team?

What are your thoughts on this potential trade? Do you think Hoerner would be a good fit for the Red Sox? Share your opinions in the comments below!
