The city is actively negotiating to acquire two iconic buildings that embody Tempe’s rich past, aiming to breathe new life into their storied walls. Recently, officials announced that Tempe is in discussions to purchase the historic Tempe National Bank building, currently owned by Wexford Developments, along with the Tempe Hardware building, owned by Stu Siefe. These negotiations received approval from the Tempe City Council during their latest regular meeting, signaling a significant step toward conservation and revitalization.
Mayor Corey Woods emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This could be a vital purchase for our community. We are committed to attracting local businesses that cater to all ages and income levels, enriching our downtown district.” He also added, “There’s a genuine demand from residents for the authentic charm that only downtown Tempe can offer.” This highlights the community’s desire to preserve the city’s unique character while encouraging economic vitality.
If these negotiations culminate in a sale, the city envisions transforming these historic properties into vibrant retail and dining spots. This strategic move aims to support small, local entrepreneurs by providing them with a prime opportunity to establish their presence in these preserved spaces, helping foster a lively, distinctive downtown atmosphere.
Adding to this momentum, owners of the famed Thai restaurant Glai Baan plan to open a new concept within the Gov. B. B. Moeur House—a building recognized both on the Tempe Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Such initiatives demonstrate how historic buildings can serve as the foundation for innovative businesses while maintaining their cultural significance.
Specifically, the Tempe Hardware building is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Tempe Historic Property Register, emphasizing its importance to local history. Likewise, the Tempe National Bank building holds a similar status on the Tempe Historic Property Register.
