UK's First Shopping Centre Transforms: 150 New Stores & More! | Brent Cross 50th Anniversary (2026)

The UK's first-ever shopping center is getting a major upgrade with 150 brand-new stores, marking a significant milestone in retail history. Brent Cross Shopping Centre in North London, the country's first out-of-town indoor shopping center, opened its doors 50 years ago on March 2, 1976. It was a groundbreaking concept at the time, officially unveiled by the then-Prince of Wales, now King Charles III. The center's impact on retail design was immense, setting the stage for future shopping hubs like Lakeside, Bluewater, and Westfield.

The original center, built by Hammerson, took 19 years and £20 million to complete, despite initial opposition from local shopkeepers. It started with 800,000 sq ft of retail space across 52 acres, but now, it's set to double in size. The expansion will bring in approximately 2 million square feet of retail and leisure facilities, including 150 new retail outlets, 50 new eateries, a cinema complex, and a brand-new hotel.

The center's evolution is part of a larger £8 billion Brent Cross Town scheme, which aims to establish it as one of Britain's premier retail hubs. JD Sports is expanding with a 12,066 sq ft store, while Newbie, a trendy Swedish clothing brand, is introducing its 'pre-loved' second-hand concept. Urban Leisure Group is adding a 7,400 sq ft venue, offering seasonal fare and drinks in the heart of the new public space, Neighborhood Square.

The Co-op recently opened a 3,000 sq ft store, and The 108, a new indoor padel courts center, is also joining the lineup. Despite its age and dated aesthetics, Brent Cross has maintained its status as a thriving retail hub. It has even served as a backdrop for films like the James Bond blockbuster 'Tomorrow Never Dies'.

As the center undergoes this massive redevelopment, it continues to play an iconic role in the area's exciting new chapter, offering a blend of old and new experiences for shoppers and residents alike.
