Bold claim: credit where it’s due—Bawumia should be recognized for the Gold-for-Reserve policy that the current government is now pursuing.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has pressed this point, arguing that while the Mahama administration is the one implementing the policy today, the core idea originated with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. In responding to the president’s address on Friday, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that the policy has yielded some economic gains, but insisted that the intellectual ownership belongs to Bawumia.
He emphasized this by challenging the narrative about the policy’s origins, saying, “Mr. Speaker, the Gold-For-Reserve policy what they have failed to tell Ghanaians is that the Bawumia that they attacked is the brainchild of this policy.” He also invoked a local proverb to underscore the need to properly recognize political adversaries when their contributions are valid.
Concluding, the Minority Leader urged the government to acknowledge Bawumia’s role: “Mr. Speaker, I would want to urge the government give to Bawumia what belongs to Bawumia.”
